Democrats & Scandal: John Edwards Admits to Affair

I preface this by saying: I bought a "John Edwards is Good!" T-shirt - an expensive shirt on college-student money. That should say a lot.

So you can imagine my laughter at the utter ridiculousness of a National Enquirer article, claiming his infidelity. His love story with cancer-ridden wife, Elizabeth, had tugged at American heartstrings, and built trust with voters. The truth comes out, and today that truth came out... reluctantly... and quite riddled with odd inconsistencies.

Affairs? Rubbish. That is hardly the issue at hand. CNN today tells me "infidelity is not uncommon today, and that's very sad." Sad, but true. Spitzer? Clinton? Craig? Let's face it, politicians are far from being the most moral. Even McCain had problems with infidelity in the past.

The issue is this-
"In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up – feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself."
I feel Senator Edwards remains in this state of compartmentalized disillusion. (99% honest? stripped bare?) John Edwards had already had the affair, and yet still decided to run for President. If he had become the nominee, the Democrats would have been ruined. I donated money to a party ruiner. Shame, I had been looking forward to seeing him at the DNC in Denver.

John Edwards' Future? It may be the end. Yes, others resurface from affairs, but I believe Edwards will not resurface well in the political arena again. Why?
  • Too close to Democratic election
  • If you look at Edwards' past in politics, he'd only been Senator for only one term, before his VP bid
  • His political career / public life was closely tied to the "Teller of Truth" view of him & his family (Father of the Year in 2007?)
  • More lies: the paternity question & the money given to Rielle Hunter monthly
  • He'll likely stay under the radar and focus on poverty issues, etc.
  • Former hypocrisy - during Clinton's affair
"I think this president has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen."
I leave you with this from a "disappointed and angry" David Bonior, Edwards' former campaign manager:

"Thousands of friends of the senators and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him and he's let him down. They've been betrayed by his action."

Asked whether the affair would damage Edwards' future aspirations in public service, Bonior replied: "You can't lie in politics and expect to have people's confidence

Prediction? More lies surface, or more cover-ups ensue. (Paternity test, anyone?)

But I stand by Edwards' issues:
"If we want to live in a moral, honest just America and if we want to live in a moral and just world, we can't wait for somebody else to do it. We have to do it."
So, following this post, I will cease to mention this event again. There are more things that matter.

Note: Russia & Georgia in a war?
